On Tuesday, September 26, 2017, the Lagos State Government will unveil a new iconic statue of the late sage and nationalist,  Chief Obafemi Awolowo.  The imposing bust located on Obafemi Awolowo Way by the Lagos Television (Ltv) junction in Ikeja is a befitting replacement to the old Awolowo statue that was removed from the Allen Avenue round-about in Ikeja.  Standing at 20 feet, the new Awo bust will be unveiled by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode alongside notable dignitaries across the State.   In a press release by the State's Commissioner for Information and Strategy,  Steve Ayorinde ,  'It has always been Governor Ambode's desire to honour patriots and nationalists like Chief Obafemi Awolowo whose impeccable record and immense contribution to regional and national development inspired a new generation of brilliant and forward-looking politicians like the Governor himself'. Wayne Rooney was forced to leave the field with blood pouring from his face after suffering a nasty eye injury during Everton's 2-1 win over Bournemouth. Rooney was elbowed in the face by Bournemouth defender Simon Francis following a challenge in the air and he suffered a cut around his eye. Rooney needed lengthy treatment from the club's medical staff before he was allowed to return to the field. Rooney protested heavily to referee Martin Atkinson over the challenge but the referee refused to hand out any punishment to Francis. National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former governor of Lagos State, Senator Bola Tinubu, has linked the secession agitations agitations in the country to the “chronic failure of government to meet basic aspirations” of the citizens. Tinubu has consequently advised the Federal Government to dialogue with the agitators rather than embrace confrontational approach, warning that the “cry of separation has gained traction among the average people.” He posited that if successive governments had delivered on their promises of abundant life and justice for the citizenry, those rooting for secession would not have been taken seriously. The winner of Miss Turkey 2017 was on Friday stripped of her crown hours after winning the competition over a controversial tweet. Itir Esen,18, won the competition in Istanbul on Thursday night and was meant to represent the country in the Miss World competition in China. Hours later, organisers of the competition forced her to hand back her crown after it emerged she tweeted about a 2016 failed coup aimed at ousting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. In the already deleted tweet, Esen was said to have compared the bloodshed in her menstrual cycle with that of the 249 people who lost their lives during the failed coup that are now celebrated in Turkey as martyrs. The  CAF  Executive Committee under the chairmanship of CAF President  Ahmad , met fon Saturday, 23 September 2017 in Accra, Ghana where the decision to strip Kenya off the right to host the 2018 African Nations Championship was made. The Committee deliberated on alot of items on the agenda and issued a statement saying,  'with an overwhelming majority of the members present, it was decided to withdraw the hosting rights of the competition from Kenya in the light of accumulated delays from reports of the various inspection missions conducted in the country, the last of which took place from 11 to 17 September 2017. United States Government has said it does not consider the  Indigenous People of Biafra  (IPOB) a terrorist organisation.   The spokesman for the American Embassy in Nigeria,  Russell Brooks,  told Sunday Punch on Friday that the US was committed to Nigeria’s unity and would support a peaceful resolution of any crisis in the country.   He said,  'the United States Government is strongly committed to Nigeria’s unity. Important political and economic issues affecting the Nigerian people, such as the allocation of resources, are worthwhile topics for respectful debate in a democracy. Within the context of unity, we encourage all Nigerians to support a de-escalation of tensions and peaceful resolution of grievances.
