Image
Nigeria have become the first African side to book their place at 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ after a 1-0 win over Zambia in Uyo earned them an unassailable lead at the head of Group B. Alex Iwobi repeated his feat of being the thorn in the Zambians' side, once again finding himself on the scoresheet against the Chipolopolo. Having scored in the first Group B game between the sides, he came off the bench in the second half to end Zambian hopes of creating a final day climax on 6 November, instead seeing the Super Eagles book a spot at their sixth finals. Seen by many as the toughest group of the continent’s five qualifying tables, Nigeria have been dominant, remaining unbeaten throughout and only dropping points thanks to a Cameroonian penalty on the road in Yaounde. The 4-0 win a few days earlier against the reigning African champions was a particular highlight. With a rich youthful streak through the side, seeing the likes of Iwobi, Kelechi Iheanacho and Moses Simon score crucia...

Independence : Why Nigeria Should Remain As One - Atiku

Image
Former vice president Atiku Abubakar has released a statement to celebrate Nigeria's 57th Independence. Atiku believes that despite the Numerous challenges being faced by the country, Nigeria still has cause to celebrate. He wrote;  "On this October 1st, 2017, I congratulate President Muhammadu Buhari and all Nigerians on the occasion of Nigeria's 57th Independence anniversary. There are those that may say we have very little to celebrate and I will respectfully disagree with them. In 57 years, Nigeria has faced many challenges, but we have overcome many of those challenges and made progress in multiple spheres of human endeavour. On October 1st, 1960 when we gained independence, there were many nations in existence alongside Nigeria in the committee of nations. A number of those nations have ceased to exist as a single entity, but 57 years after the fact, we are still one and waxing stronger. That is a cause to celebrate. In 1960, South Africa and Egypt had a larger ec...

Buhari contesting for presidency in 2019 will be a joke - Richard Akinjide (SAN) says

Image
In this interview with FEMI MAKINDE of punch news, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice in the Second Republic, Chief Richard Akinjide (SAN), suggests that the structures bequeathed to Nigeria by the British colonialists must be altered before the nation can make progress. Nigeria is celebrating its 57th independence anniversary. Are you proud to be a Nigerian? No, I am not. Nigeria should have done better than what we have now. We should have been the best country in Africa. Sometime ago, I went to a university in Cape Town to deliver a lecture, and after the lecture, I answered some questions. It’s a pity, Nigeria should have been like America, Canada or Australia, but we are not. I am not happy about that at all. Where exactly did Nigeria get it wrong? One, the British emphasised their own economic interest. Two, our education was very good, and after independence, it continued to be good. But now, it has become a disaster. We also got it wrong in terms of leadership...

Orji Uzor Kalu says Nnamdi Kanu is in London, He went through Malaysia

Image
Businessman and prominent politician, Orji Uzor Kalu, tells SUNDAY ABORISADE why the Federal Government outlawed the activities of the Independent People of Biafra because its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, ignored the elders’ advice Why did you say that the agitation for a sovereign state of Biafra cannot succeed and that what the Igbo should aim at now is to produce the president of Nigeria? The Igbo should strive towards producing a president in the Federal Republic of Nigeria instead of agitating for the sovereign state of Biafra. I was the governor (of Abia State) for eight years and the issue of Biafra came up then. It even became a serious issue at a time that I decided to lead (Ralph) Uwazurike to see (former) President (Olusegun) Obasanjo but the former president refused to receive him. I was then surprised that the same Obasanjo was advising President Muhammadu Buhari to dialogue with (Nnamdi) Kanu. That sounds very funny to my ears and I don’t believe that such statement could co...

$9 billion have been used by that federal government to defend Naira - Says senate

The Senate on Tuesday said the sum of $9 billion had been spent by the federal government to defend the naira. It expressed worry that only 10 per cent of the N7.4 trillion 2017 budget has so far been implemented barely three months to the end of the year. Senator Yahaya Abdullahi (APC, Kebbi) who sponsored a motion on stabilising and sustaining post recession growth of the economy, argued that the level of harmony between the fiscal and monetary policies of government remained “very low.” He expressed frustration over the inadequate funding of the 2017 budget by the executive, fearing it could pull the country back into a recession. Consequently, the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Udoma Udo Udoma and the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun were both summoned to appear in plenary to explain the failure to fund the budget. The motion was unanimously passed by the upper legislature chamber. Abdullahi tasked the national economy managers to remain focused and ensure ...
